Module 5 Geocoding
Module 5 Geocoding
I will start by saying that I really enjoyed this module. For the first time I struggled with each Quiz more than I did with the labs.
The lab was actually really interesting because it involved going and retrieving data from public websites and then converting raw data into usable feature classes and data that can be spatially displayed and used to help make decisions.
The first image is of the map of Known Eagle Nest Locations.
The 3 Dots off the coast of Pace / Pensacola represent Approximate eagle nest locations.
The geographic coordinates for these locations were originally in Latitude , Longitude format
Hours, Minutes, Seconds
I used excel to create a formula function that would auto convert them into Northing Easting Coordinates.
The Second part of the lab involved going to two different publicly accessible websites.
The first was the website for the Florida Department of Education and the second was for the UScensus Bureau.
From these Websites I retrieved 3 pieces of data.
Two shapefiles from the US Census website for US counties, and all Roads for Florida.
The third piece of information was much more time consuming to refine and clean up because it was brought into excel by pretty much copying and pasting the information for all public schools in Manatee County Florida.
Through numerous steps in the lab I was shown how to quickly and efficiently clean the information so that it could be utilized in ArcGIS Pro Program.
Once all of the data was added to my map, I projected the coordinate systems to
NAD1983 (2011) Harn State Plane Florida West FIPS 0902 Feet.
The Second photo below is of a map layout I created for this project of the county roads and Public School Locations.
I chose a nice blue against a light brown for the roads that was just dark enough to see it against the Topographic base map.
The Dark Blue was the best contrast to the Light grey of the topographic layer beneath it.
Knowing this process is going to be so helpful in the future.
