Coastal Flood Zone Analysis
For module 4 we took a look at two areas of coast line. The first was an area called Montoloking New Jersey.
We created a 3D elevation model to analyze the differences between pre hurricane Sandy and post hurricane Sandy aftermath along the coast line. Part of this process required us to combine the pre and post results to then see the areas where the elevation changes were most drastic. We drew some conclusions as to why and how these affected areas received damage from storm surge.
The second area that we performed some analysis of flooded coast line in Naples Florida. We had three layers to process and convert into polygons from Raster feature classes. The final process required us to determine differences in how many building structures were affected based on a LiDAR data set and a USGS data set.
There definitely were some differences in flooding zones between the two Raster sets. As far as considering accuracy, I believe the LiDAR data set was the more reliable one. Not because it contained less buildings but analyzing specific areas seemed to be more refined on a large scale look at the map.
